Description:Vintage Reed Sportswear (Detroit) black leather moto jacket, made in the USA circa 1970. Reed Sportswear was a prominent American manufacturer producing durable leather garments throughout the mid-20th century, particularly for motorcycle and workwear use.
This jacket has undergone an extensive, professional restoration performed entirely by Johnson Leathers in San Francisco, CA, one of the most respected leather specialists in the United States. The jacket was completely disassembled and re-sewn using modern high-tensile blended yarn, dramatically improving structural integrity while preserving the original pattern, proportions, and character. The interior lining was fully and professionally replaced as part of the same restoration. All restoration work was completed in 2023.
The leather has been consistently conditioned over time and remains thick and mildly rigid, which is typical and desirable for traditional motorcycle jackets. This is not a soft nappa-style fashion leather; it is a substantial, moto-weight hide designed to hold structure, age with character, and break in gradually with wear.
Adding to its provenance, this jacket belonged to my uncle, a lifelong motorcycle enthusiast who lived in San Francisco during the 1960s and 1970s, aligning closely with the era and culture in which this jacket was originally worn.
