Details

3.1 Phillip Lim is an American designer label for men and women by designer Phillip Lim.

Phillip Lim ran and operated his Los Angeles-based fashion label Development from 2000 to 2004. In the fall of 2005, he launched his designer line 3.1 Phillip Lim with his friend and fabric supplier Wen Zhou. Wen serves as the President and CEO, whereas Lim is the Creative Director for the label. The fashion line was an instant critical and commercial success and has since expanded to include womenswear, menswear, accessories, and footwear.

They called the label "3.1" because they both were 31 years old at the time.

For the 2006 fall collection, Lim aimed to "inject some 'street elegance' " into his designs. The following year, in 2007, he received the "Emerging Talent in Womenswear" award for his work at 3.1 Phillip Lim from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. In 2012, he was awarded the council's Swarovski award for Menswear.

The line's fall 2007 collection was inspired by socialite Edith Bouvier Beale and meant to embody what Lim called "pedigree minus prudence".

On September 15, 2013, Lim's collaboration with retail chain Target debuted to select Target stores in the US and Canada. The fall collection included both women's and men's apparel and accessories ranging in price from $19.99 to $299.99.

As of 2022, 3.1 Phillip Lim is available in over 400 boutiques and department stores across 50 countries, with flagship stores in New York, Los Angeles, London, Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Taiwan.

Trivia

The founders, Lim and Wen, named their line "3.1" because they both were 31 at the time.
