Details

3x1 is American premium jeans designed and made in New York City. The name, 3x1 is derived from denim's standard weaving construction, the 3x1 (right hand twill.)

The label was launched in 2011 by denim veteran Scott Morrison, who had previously founded Paper Denim & Cloth (in 1999) and Earnest Sewn (in 2004). As he explains in a May 2018 interview with Surface Mag, "the mission of 3×1 was to dive deeper into the design, manufacturing, and production of luxury denim and jeans, and to invite people into that process."

The brand started out as an experiential retail concept at their flagship store at 15 Mercer Street, SoHo, New York, (closed since Jan. 2020,) where people could visit and pick from a wide collection of selvedge jeans, or even have a bespoke pair made for them. Later, they developed a ready-to-wear business at that location. Behind the store was their manufacturing facility and the customers can see the jeans being made through a big glass window while they shop. Their wholesale collection also sells at various high-end fashion stores in New York, including Net-A-PorterIntermixBarneys New YorkBergdorf Goodman, and Saks Fifth Avenue. The shop closed in January 2020 due to a combination of personal and professional reasons for Morrison.

In 2018, 3x1 collaborated with acclaimed New York City-based designer, Joe Doucet, to create what they called "A Jean for the 21st Century." The jeans, created using 11.5oz stretch selvedge denim from Kurabo, Japan, featured microfiber pockets to clean and protect electronic devices; a slightly larger coin pocket, lined with RFID-blocking fabric, to accommodate credit cards; and reflective black adhesive tape that runs down the center back of each leg for increased visibility while commuting in low light.

In 2019, 3x1 collaborated with Mimi Cuttrell, a New York-based fashion stylist.

In 2016, Scott Morrison, along with Andy Dunn (founder of Bonobos), Man Repeller's Leandra Medine, and Hayley Barna or BirchBox, invested in AYR's split from Bonobos.

Trivia
